Green Card Renewal
Green Cards expire every 10 years. Don't wait until the very last moment or when your green card has
already expired, you can start applying for a green card renewal
process within the 6 months before expiration date.
Expiration Date On Green Card
How do I know if my green card has expired?
To find out if your green card is expired or about to, you can check on the expiration date printed on
front of the green card.
Renewal Process of the Green Card also applies for Green Card Holders living outside the United States
whether their Green Card will expire within 6 months or is already expired.
I can't find the expiration date on my green card
If there's no expiration date on the front of your green card it might be because you have
an older version, and, in most cases, it is no longer valid; so you should
apply for a green card renewal as soon as possible.
Green Card Holders Living Outside the US
If you are a Permanent Resident with a Form I 551 (Green Cards Holder) living in the US or outside it
and your green card has already expired or will expire within 6 months you should immediately apply for a
Green Card Renewal Process otherwise you may be denied to entry the United States or even be charged a
misdemeanor.
When will I receive my new Green Card?
It will take an average of 8 - 9 months to receive your new green card, but
in just 8 weeks you will receive a receipt notice from the USCIS that you can use as a valid
replacement for your expired green card while you wait for the real one.
Why Should You Renew Your Green Card?
These are the main reasons why you should always renew your green card if it has expired:
-
You cannot apply for a new job. Employers cannot legally accept
an expired green card from a job applicant, so
an expired green card could cause you a disqualification from a job opportunity.
-
Re-entry to the United States after travel abroad requires a
valid/unexpired proof of permanent residence. If your green card
is expired and you plan to re-entry the U.S. you might be required to pay a steep re-entry fee or this could even create you delays or
more significant immigration problems.
-
You cannot apply for a driver's license or renew it.
-
You cannot apply for mortgage loans to buy a house since most mortgage
lenders will require a current green card that has not expired.
-
You cannot apply for U.S. Citizenship. U.S. Naturalization process requires a valid - not expired green card.
